Jim West, Senescent, 2018, Rusted steel, 20’ in three sections (6.10m), Collection of the Artist, Pittsburgh, PA
Once vibrant, strong and functional, an historic but aging bridge devolves into obsolescence. In the process of becoming old, in a state of being old, the structure is dismantled and its pieces are reclaimed. Its purpose may have ended, but its meaning is restored. A bridge, by definition, is a passage and a pathway. It is a conduit, in many ways, from one place to another. Senescent is a metaphor for the continuity of life. It is the journey of a lifetime—from one life to the next.
